A large-scale public solar lighting project in Senegal
Since 2017, Fonroche Lighting has been supporting the Senegalese government in improving its solar lighting infrastructure. After winning an initial public tender to install 50,000 streetlights across Senegal, a new phase has seen the deployment of 65,000 additional units. This autonomous solution ensures sustainable, high-quality and safe access to light, especially in rural areas and villages far from the electrical grid.
The first phase focused on Dakar, major cities, and main roads. Now, the second phase aims to bring lighting to 265 rural municipalities, strengthening security, living conditions, and economic development in these areas.
What are the benefits of streetlights in Senegal?
1. Renewable and cost-effective energy
These streetlights rely on photovoltaic panels and batteries to provide clean energy and reduce dependency on traditional electricity. By adopting this innovative product, Senegal lowers energy consumption and operational costs while supporting global sustainability goals.
2. Durable and efficient solution
Fonroche Lighting’s streetlights are designed for long-lasting performance and resistance to extreme weather. With a smart energy management system, they deliver consistent and intelligent lighting, adapted to local and technical constraints.
3. Increased safety for urban and rural areas
The installation of 115,000 streetlights improves security by lighting roads, public squares, urban centers, and villages. This infrastructure enhances visibility and reduces risks of accidents and insecurity after nightfall, positively impacting everyday life.
4. A development driver for the country
This initiative supports Senegal’s electrification, giving local populations better access to energy for evening activities. The government-led program, executed by ANER (National Agency for Renewable Energies), is a major step in the country's energy transition and aligns with international development strategies.
5. Strong societal impact
Thanks to fast installation, the system quickly brings lighting where it’s needed. Beyond environmental and safety benefits, these solar lights boost social and commercial activities at night, strengthening community ties and improving quality of life. This project also represents a success story in infrastructure development.
